Imagine being able to zoom far beyond the reach of standard telephoto lenses, to capture not just the moon, but the craters, peaks and valleys of its surface. Imagine being able to view the International Space Station in flight, even the rings of Saturn-not with a telescope, but with a one-of-a-kind Nikon camera. Introducing the COOLPIX P1000, the most extreme zoom Nikon ever, and a game-changer for birders, sports and wildlife enthusiasts, travel photographers and even those aspiring to venture to the moon and beyond without leaving their backyard.

Great photos and videos from day one

Automatic features for point and shoot simplicity

Point and shoot simplicity

The COOLPIX P1000 has a host of automatic functions to help you capture great photos from day one. Scene modes optimize settings for a selected scene type such as portrait, sunset, landscape, night and more, while auto ISO, exposure and white balance ensure great, hassle-free results so you can focus on getting the shot.

Moon and bird modes

Take the guess work out of shooting tricky far off subjects. Moon mode automatically compensates for low light astrophotography while the advanced bird-watching mode optimizes the camera's settings for capturing elusive creatures.

Creative modes

Stylize your shots with easy-to-use filters organized in five groups: Light, for brightening color, Depth for calming atmosphere, Memory, for creating old-fashioned looks, Classical, for traditional photo effects and Noir, a collection of monochrome tones.

Picture controls

Find the right look for any scene with Nikon's Picture Controls. Shoot in Standard, Neutral, Vivid or Monochrome and find a style that's all your own.

Handy extras

Dot Sight (Optional)

Keeping distant moving subjects in frame is tricky. The DF-M1 Dot Sight attaches to the COOLPIX P1000's hot-shoe and assists in acquiring distant subjects by acting as a zoomed-out targeting device. Just line up the subject in the Dot Sight at a normal field of view to easily track it at extreme magnifications.

Remote control (optional)

The new ML-L7 Remote Control allows various camera functions, such as zoom, aperture, ISO and the COOLPIX P1000s shutter to be triggered remotely without disrupting the camera and your composition during super telephoto shooting.

Technology

VR image stabilization

A Nikon technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake.

ISO 6400

Maximum high ISO available on the camera is 6400 ISO.

CMOS

Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, one of the two main types of image sensors used in digital cameras. The Nikon COOLPIX CMOS image sensor with a backside illumination structure increases the amount of light that each pixel receives. The resulting improvement in noise and sensitivity reduction makes the select COOLPIX cameras more capable when shooting night scenes or in dark indoor situations.

Clear Color Display

This innovative technology improves screen visibility for a more vivid, clear image when taking and sharing pictures. Reflections are minimized while contrast and power savings are improved. (In select COOLPIX models).

Scene Auto Selector / Easy Auto Mode

Nikon COOLPIX cameras are so smart they know what kind of picture you're taking and can automatically select from six commonly used scene modes, eliminating the mode-setting procedure and streamlining the shooting process.

Target Finding AF

Select COOLPIX digital cameras utilize the Target Finding AF feature which instantaneously assesses the intended subject and automatically adjusts the AF area according to its size to assure clearly focused images.

 Subject Tracking

COOLPIX cameras and select D-SLRs in Live View mode, maintain focus on a moving subject using a contrast detection system, which is based on the principle that objects in a scene that are in focus display the highest contrast.

Wi-Fi

Refers to wireless technology and wireless communication. In photography, it's most commonly the wireless transmission of images directly from a camera to a computer in order to achieve a swifter workflow.

Dynamic Fine Zoom

Dynamic Fine Zoom is a new feature available on select Nikon COOLPIX digital cameras that extends the zoom range electronically 2x with minimal image degradation.

Don't analyse it too much, it's good

I am just a click and shoot birder, so not looking for the professional kit, but this is the next best thing, there is nothing in bridge cameras you could get that is better than this, you would need to move to an SLR.
It is BIG, but not unmanageable, at first I thought it is too big, but after a few weeks it is easy enough to handle one handed even. At full zoom you should really use a tripod, but even without it I get some beautiful clear shots, and soooo close, its a dream.
Really happy with it, at first, bought unseen, I was a little dubious, but with a bit of use and getting used to its handling, its brilliant.

Did you find it helpful?

Its a smartphone attached to a telescope. Rings of Saturn POSSIBLE.

I had the smaller P900 and love this one more. It is not small, the camera is huge and barely just fits in camera bags. I've had it now for about 1 year. I would recommend it.
Its great for moon shots, however bird shots need good light as when at full zoom - needs a bright subject to avoid blur - however it specially has a bird mode where it takes a bunch of shots in a row.
its excellent for sunset photography.
with a silver filter you can do SUN shots, but I wouldnt recommend until you have the proper kit else you'll kill the sensor.
generally you use it at 500mm or 3000mm - that is optical, and then you can digital zoom more to 600...view more
