5-bay 3.5"/2.5" SATA expansion

Easily add 5 additional drive bays to Synology DiskStation1. Supporting both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives, DX517 is a flexible solution supporting on-the-fly volume expansion or serving as a local backup destination.


Online volume expansion

Managed from DiskStation Manager on the host NAS, the additional bays in the DX517 are immediately ready to be used once connected. On-the-fly volume expansion ensures that storage and services on the host are not interrupted during volume expansion.


Hot-swappable drive tray design

The hot-swappable drive trays of DX517 allow easy drive installation and replacement without powering down the system. Screwless drive tray design reduces the time needed for system setup.


Dedicated local backup solution

Synology DX517 can be used as a dedicated local backup solution for the Synology DiskStation. When created as a separate volume, the DX517 provides a great backup solution to its local hard disks in case of system failure.

Exactly what is promised, however...

... Users must be aware of what that is, to avoid making any mistakes with their storage!

The DX517 expands the drives for your Synology NAS and is NOT a separate NAS itself.

This means you can expand your storage but you need to think carefully about how you do that.
If you expand existing storage you can create the risk of losing data if EITHER of your NAS components fail.

So keeping the storage within the DX517 in separate pools and volumes is probably wise, which means protecting your data may limit your ability to create symbolic links or junctions across devices.

Good for the price

Needed this for a backup set of drives and for that it serves the purpose. Couple of things to note: you cannot power this off independently as the power is controlled by its master unit, and it is a little on the noisy side when hard at work (fan noise and hdd reverb T think). Also I was stuck for a suitable raid option and went for Raid0 over the 4 drives I had - resulting in 4 x 6TB showing as one volume. I have one space left which I was hoping to add for another backup task BUT it looks as though you are restricted to just the one Volume on this extension. So beware, there are some limitations on its configuration - you cannot have 5...view more
