But then I went to ride it (after setting up the mandatory connection to the Segway app).

It needs a good kick to 5-6km to get going (it seems to take a second or two to register that its over 5km/h) , and if it slows down below 5km/h it just stops.

Its not zippy, it has a graduated acceleration that must have seemed like a good idea to implement but makes it feel like a lime scooter in a low speed zone (acceleration wise). It does have a good top speed when it gets there. The limited power at low speed causes problems when you slow down, for example going up a hill, it puts less power into the motor, causing further slow down, and when you drop to 5km/h it just stops, and you're walking the scooter. NOT happy about that feature, I live in a place which has hills.

The spec sheet (& manual & website) says it will go up at 20% incline, but going up my street which would be about 5%, it just slows to a crawl and stops (I'm like 90ish kg, so well under the 120kg max).

In a flat city like Christchurch, this scooter would be alright, (port hills aside), but in Auckland or Wellington, its terrible, not fit for purpose & not worth the money.

One other thing, the F40 is not rated for use in the rain or any sort of wet weather (user instructions state "do not ride scooter in the rain or through puddles")

My old M365 goes up the hills fine, through puddles & in the rain & even after 3 years & 2500km its still going strong (I use it for commuting), I was looking for something better, which this is not.

There don't appear to be any alternate firmwares for the F40 yet either (as of Nov '21), which would let me adjust the various annoying parameters.

This scooter is a great buy for the price, it's got me everywhere I need to go. I weigh 65kg and I love how fast the acceleration is and the 30km/h speed. the range is definitely not even close to 40km though, the most I've ever gotten is probably using eco the whole time and only then did I get 32km out of it. the advertised 20% climbing gradient is garbage, going up a 5% hill it will slow to a crawl and stop.

I ended up finding some on trade me which is stupid. you can't ride the scooter with a flat tyre so please just dish out the extra cash and get something with tubeless tyres like the G30 MAX

Very happy with product and service have got with this one. Scooter is good quality, with good range and speed. Been using nearly every day since I bought it and no complaints with performance. F40 scooter is fun!, has a payload weight of upto 120kg (im 98kg), and it reaches its max speed of 30k's relatively quickly. The claimed distance of 40k's is from running it in "standard mode", which ive never done since purchasing. I've only run it in "sports mode" (which is where max speed of 30k's is from), I've never completely drained the battery to 0%, but what I can say, is that (in sport mode), and with the battery going from 100% to 50%, I had covered about 12.6 kilometres in distance.

One could almost assume that the total distance in sport mode would see you get about 25-30k distance.

Its "ok" to ride in light rain (although not recommended), and the segway ninebot app for Android is relatively simple to use, with a cool customization option that allows you to choose what you want your tail light to do.

I have owned Segway F40 for almost a month now.

If you are thinking about buying for a child, please consider how quickly this thing accelerates.
It's also front wheel drive so the front wheel "can" spin a little on certain terrain.

No issues at all here. I would say that the person with the 1 star review may of had the scooter in "D" mode when having the issues about slow start and up hill. This mode does have a slower start and struggles uphill. How ever if you change mode to "S" mode, this baby flies up the hills and take off speed if perfect and I'd compare it to the ES4 which has amazing take off and hill climb in its sports mode. Highly recommend. Have already purchased 2 of these from here for Daughter and a friend, about to purchase another 2 so I can upgrade myself and the wife from our ES4's No issues at all here. Great scooter the price. I’ve used this pretty much everyday since it arrived 2 months ago. I would highly recommend this scooter to anyone thinking of getting one. I was hesitant to buy this scooter based on the one low star review but I have been really happy with my purchase of two of them. The scooter engages into electric with one small push and can go max about 31 km/h. Very comfortable to ride with pneumatic tires and the disc brakes are very effective. To start with I needed something that can climb hills and have a bit of range. The specs say 40km, but im real world this was never a realistic ask anyway, I accepted that. I only needed 20km per charge.
Me being close to the weight limit I am able to get the max speed in D mode of 30km on a flat surface, and at an avg speed of 20kmph I can easily get 20km with some spare on the battery.

Great solid scooter for the price. Shock absorption works very well, disc brakes are smooth and very satisfied with battery power. Today I went 9km with the scooter to drop off and pick up my car from the garage, the scooter was down from 5 to 1.5 of five bars and didn't go anywhere near top speed anymore. My daily commute is 2.5km one way and I can do 4 to 6 trips before I have to recharge - that said, the last trip usually is at 10km/h. I would estimate the range is maybe 15km for typical use, it is nowhere near 40km.

I find it quite disappointing the F40 doesn't go anywhere near the specifications, or specifications are broken down so you can look up what is achievable at what weight.

Riding comfort on the 10" inflated tires is very good and brakes are good. There is only a rear disk brake, it really should have both front and rear brakes.

A lock can be pulled through between two tubes at the front, that's a good thing.

The lights are OK, but not great. Compared to my e-bike the scooter's lights are not great. For people who use this in darkness (for example commuting in winter) better lights are highly recommended.

I cannot get the app to track travel or do anything useful. There is no anti-theft function via the app, which is disappointing.

Now, this isn't a bad scooter, but it's certainly not a great one. If I had known, I would have bought a better one, but I guess I was sucked in by the Segway name. That's the risk of buying online and assuming the specs actually do apply.

This scooter will suit someone who is way lighter than the 120kg limit and travels short distances on flat ground during daylight hours. And someone who doesn't expect the app to actually do something. If that's you, this is a good budget scooter.

I still give this 4 stars, because it's good for what you pay.
