It's important to know the difference between Shingled recording (SMR) and Conventional drives (CMR). This drive may not properly save your data if it shuts down suddenly and may take longer to write random sections of the disk due to the overlapping (shingled) rewriting that is required. It is basically an overpacked 3GB drive. I would personally not recommend it over a CMR drive - check the WD website for the model number (this one is WD40EZAZ) and "Recording Technology" to be sure of what you are getting. This is a great price for such a good amount of storage. Maybe I am a little biased in my experience, but my western digital drives just seems more reliable and last longer than my seagate drives. Well worth spending a few dollars more for the reliability. This is a great price for such a good amount of storage. I chose this one expecting improved performance over the earlier version (I own 2x3TB/64MB cache) at the same quietness. I bought two for a RAID 0 setup for a single computer showing 360/365MB/sec write/read speeds, indicating about 180MB/sec for a single drive. Power consumption is so low that I can switch off the enclosure's fan. Very happy with this product.
