ASUS RT-AX55 Wi-Fi 6 Gigabit Wireless Router, Dual-Band AX1800, 1 x WAN, 4 x LAN, VPN

The price aint cheap, but its worth it. After purchasing similarly priced prosumer routers previously (different brand) that were somehow still as flakey as a free ISP router, this one made me brand loyal.

+ Excellent WiFi range, and the normal + 4g bands are bonded together seemlessly
+ Great web interface
+ Amazing tools, including free DDNS that gives you a URL that points to your home public IP
+ PBTech has instructions on its site for setting up this brand's devices for your home fibre connection

I used to get random drop-outs from the internet with my other new router. The problem was solved by replacing this router with the ASUS RT-AX55. The ASUS is performing reliably with no drop-outs. I've got two Asus AX55's acting as AI Mesh nodes slaved to the more powerful AX86U, and so far it's been really good. The UI is a aesthetically bit hideous, but actually very functional and more explanatory than most. I love that once you configure the nodes as nodes, you no longer log into them, they're incorporated into the UI of the main router.

Until the AI Mesh 2.0 firmware update in Jan 2021, the AI Mesh system didn't extend to the guest network, which was the whole point in my case (we have two outbuildings which struggled for signal). However, that critical update wasn't officially pushed to this AX55. Luckily I found on SNB forum a link apparently from Asus themselves to release candidate versions of the eventually-released AI Mesh 2.0 firmware. And it included a version for this AX55, and so manually loading that means that the guest network is now broadcast and available from the mesh nodes too. Asus support didn't even know about it.

I may consider putting Merlin firmware on it, which has a few extra features that might be useful to some users.

Pity it doesn't have a wall mounting option, that would have been handy in my case.

For a budget yet still feature-filled Wi-Fi router, the ASUS RT-AX55 does it's job admirably. Also working well as a mesh Wi-Fi system using ASUS' AiMesh system. In fact I bought two for that very purpose - one acting as the router, the other a mesh node. Doing so was actually cheaper than buying purpose-built mesh Wi-Fi with this feature-set.

However the quality of the construction is just a tad lacking - on both my units a couple of the aerials are wobbly, and they're all non-detachable as well, which is a shame. I finally got sick of the rubbish router my ISP provided and went into PB to get a new one. The salesman who helped me (sorry can't his name) was awesome and suggested this unit, setup was straight forward following the online guide PB have (which you have to google). Actually have two of these, linked in an AiMesh environment to an AX-82U (all from PB Tech). Collectively work well to produce good wireless speeds for our double story house. I find the interface either on the web or the Asus phone app useful to identify which devices are on the network.
