This is the message it prints out when I try to print something on it without signing up for their "free" online service HP+.
HP+ is a 2 year contract with HP that cannot be disassociated from the printer - goodbye any chance of reselling it.
Even if you do, according to their FAQ it won't print at all unless it's connected to the internet.

My take: this song and dance is so it can enforce 1st party toner.

Best price I've seen for toner comes out at about 9c/page.

This cutie is an ideal printer for your occasional printing at home. If you need to print out a page or two in a week, I totally recommend this model. For the price of a cartridge you get very decent quality and speed. The toner subscription is optional and depends on how regular you will be printing. After finishing the smaller bundled one, I just bought a regular and expect it to last for a couple of years.

This printer is NOT for you, if you plan to print large amount of pages at once. The trays are tiny and flimsy, so unlikely to hold more than 10 pages at once. I bought this printer out of desperation, not realizing I had dug a hole. HP expects the user to sign up for an ink subscription. I have toner but the printer will not print without the subscription.
