Academy Educational - Davinci Helicopter

Leonardo Da Vinci (born in 1452, died in 1519) was undoubtedly one of the most brilliant minds of the Renaissance and is widely regarded as one of the most talented people in history. He was not only an exceptionally skilled painter, the author of masterpieces like "The Lady with an Ermine" and "The Last Supper", but also an extremely prolific inventor and innovator. His curiosity and genius spanned many fields, from art to science and engineering.

One of the areas of knowledge that particularly fascinated him was the concept of human flight. Leonardo Da Vinci created numerous designs for flying machines, and among these, one can find a design that, to a very remote extent, could be considered the progenitor of modern helicopters. This particular project proposed the construction of a wooden aircraft powered by a spiral-shaped rotor, which resembled the shape of a worm screw.

The rotor would be constructed from wood and stiff cloth, and the propulsion would be provided by four men who would move on the platform at the bottom of the aircraft. While the design itself was far from functional, it demonstrated Da Vinci's remarkable ability to think outside the box and explore concepts far ahead of his time.

It is worth noting that the first designs of this flying machine were likely created around 1480, but more refined and mature sketches can be found in The Atlantic Codex-a collection of notes written by Leonardo between 1489-1492. These designs reflected his deep understanding of flight principles, even though they were not realized in his lifetime.
