Background
The story of the Charles de Gaulle began in 1974, when the oil crisis rocked the industrialized countries. In this context, the French government decided to embark on the construction of the Porte-Hélicoptères-75, a 16,400-ton nuclear-powered helicopter carrier-a project that was ultimately abandoned.
In 1982, the Supreme Council of the French Navy requested that the nuclear propulsion studies from the PH-75 project (later renamed Aircraft Carrier-75, then PA-83) be used to develop a new generation of aircraft carriers to replace the Clemenceau and Foch before the end of the century. Nuclear propulsion would enable longer missions without the need for refueling.
More than 10,000 plans were drawn up by the engineers of the Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN), and on February 4, 1986, construction of the ship, christened Charles de Gaulle, was authorized. It was launched on May 7, 1994, and entered service on May 18, 2001. A true engineering feat, the aircraft carrier features 12 mobile masses of 22 tons each that stabilize the ship in rough seas, enabling aircraft deployment in force 5 or 6 conditions. Its stealthy shape helps reduce radar detection. As of 2020, France and the United States are the only countries to have completed construction of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
