Background

Planning for the C-118 began during World War II. The goal was to build a heavy-duty version of the C-54 Skymaster for the U.S. Air Force. The first prototype flew on February 15, 1946. A total of 167 C-118 or R-60 Liftmasters were delivered to the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy, where they served with distinction and contributed significantly to the operational capabilities of both branches.
