Background

During the reign of Elizabeth I, England began expanding its maritime presence by establishing new trade routes. One of the most famous voyages was led by Sir Francis Drake, carried out under the pretense of a mission to Egypt. On December 13, 1577, five ships-Pelican, Elizabethan, Marigold, Swan, and Benedict-set sail from Plymouth on this secretive expedition.

After successfully navigating through the Strait of Magellan into the Pacific Ocean, Drake renamed his flagship from the Pelican to the Golden Hind to further disguise the true nature of the voyage. This renaming marked a pivotal moment in maritime history, and the ship went on to become a symbol of English naval ambition, innovation, and daring.
