The first generation Chevelle (1964 to 1967) was upgraded with more power in 1965. It was the first time the Chevy "Big Block" was put into this mid-size car. Known as the Z-16 it was very limited, but listed as a Regular Production Option (RPO) at a price tag of $1,501.00. While only 201 Z-16 Chevelle SS were produced, they made their mark in Muscle Car history. In addition to its 396 cubic inch "Big Block" engine, the Z-16 package incorporated a number of additional upgrades. The frame was strengthened with box sections from the convertible, bigger brakes from the Impala and a heavy duty suspension. In 1965 magazine road tests the Z-16 went zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and cut the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds.
