This model kit represents a unique unit of the Red Army that played an important role during the early stages of World War II, particularly in winter campaigns. These skier troops first appeared during the Winter War of 1939 against Finland, where harsh snow-covered terrain made traditional infantry movement difficult.
These troops were mainly composed of students and professional athletes, particularly from physical education institutions. Due to their advanced physical conditioning and skiing skills, they were ideally suited for rapid movement across snowfields, allowing them to perform special operations behind enemy lines.
In battle, Soviet ski troops were highly effective at executing surprise attacks, destroying key enemy installations, and gathering intelligence. During the Battle of Moscow (1941-1942), more than 30 specialized ski battalions participated in counterattacks, flanking German troops and contributing to the Soviet Union's defense and eventual pushback of enemy forces.
