I purchased this to scan old photos. It reviewed well pre-purchase for this task in this price range. It was easy and quick to install and can scan multiple photos, at the same time, and download to separate files. It’s size and weight make it portable and it is fast to scan and download. Installed well, software downloaded and installed easily, enhancing the use of the scanner. Compatible with Paint, and GIMP import which I use. Worked straight out of the box. I had the manual and software downloaded from Canon before ordering. Couldn't do the installation until I had the scanner connected, but that's understandable.

Simple scanning documents and photos is a breeze. If you want the highest resolution you have to use the 'Driver' option in the start screen. And if you want resolution above 600dpi, you may have to go into preferences and select the option to allow large files. 4800 dpi is, of course, rather slow. But you won't want it often unless you have very specialised needs.

The computer screen displays a 'thermometer scale' indication of how long the job will take, but it has completed every time I used it when the scale reached about 10%. This is not a problem but I would like to see a software update for it anyway.

I'm using a 2019 MacBook Air running OSX 10.14.6

It's good value for the price. It is fast and works well. It's suitable for my needs and would be great for archiving receipts and documents and copying anything where absolute colour accuracy isn't critical. It does do a good job with photos and printed images as well, but if you require very accurate detail and colour reproduction, for example archiving photographic prints or negatives or for fine art purposes, you should definitely buy a much more expensive professional-level photo scanner. This one doesn't get the colours quite right sometimes, particularly with bright pinks, oranges, reds. It's good value for the price. It is fast and works well. As good as any scanner could be. It's fast, and with many settings in the software so can be tweaked to suit needs between text, images and grayscale. I think this scanner is a good choice for anyone wanting easy and quick use. When you plug it into the computer it will work right away but if you're want to use this scanner to its full abilitys I reccomend installing the canoscan software, the software let's you change settings and scan multiple photos at once, the software look a bit outdated but it does the job well. The scanner also has a locking function for the scan head to minimize damage during transport. In some places the plastic seems a bit flimsy but for the price I will not complain about that. I read several reviews before I purchased the Canoscan 400 to use with my MacBook Pro. The secret for instant issue-free connectivity was using Image Capture, the default application provided with all MacBooks. Of particular importance for me was being able to place 4-5 photos on the deck and have them scan as separate files. I am very happy with the end result so far. Pretty much does what it says. I can scan in 2 photos simultaneously, with them coming out perfectly cropped as two files.

Love the fact that this is powered by a single USB cable (Cable included). Easy set up and use, software is pretty straightforward with plenty of options and if that's too confusing just hit the auto scan button on the scanner. Compact enough to store in my desk draw, though the build is a little lightweight, but it's not like I'm throwing this thing around the room. Good quality scans for documents and artwork.
