The Google TV Steamer is an interesting upgrade to the Google Chromecast lineup. This product is expensive, but the value comes from the faster device and ethernet options. From the initial setup, it is faster to load and quickly respond to buttons compared to the Chromecast 4k with Google TV. The image clarity has improved and the remote is a better size. If you plan to use this device with streaming platforms with inbuilt players you will love this device, but only buy this if you have a 4k TV.

However, I have a couple of issues (fault of Google) that make this device a regret to buy:
1. The packaging of the Google TV Steamer is a definite downgrade compared to the Chromecast lineup. At no fault with PB Tech or the delivery company, this device packaging came open when received. The main tab to seal the box lost stickiness, which resulted in all of the contents of the Google TV Streamer becoming loose and the internal packaging was so bad it went everywhere. For some reason, Google made the box way too big and the paper-based blister-style packaging didn't look after the contents, with the paper top losing its stickiness.
2. Those that use different streaming options, it is best to do your research, which I didn't do. A quick Reddit search will find that the player on the Google TV Streamer doesn't support HDR or DV (Dolby Vision) content. Hopefully, with an update google will sort this, but you may need to buy a player app that supports DV at least, nothing for HDR at this stage. The Chromecast 4k with Google TV runs this content with no issues. The issue stems from the newer different CPU.

Other than the issues I have stated above, this device is great. But maybe hold back on this device and look at Reddit until the issues are resolved.

Purchased for my mother's old Panasonic Plasma TV (over 10 years old). She previous had a Google Chromecast, which involved using her phone to stream and control Netflix / TVNZ on Demand etc. With the Google TV Streamer 4K and accompanying remote, the old TV has been given a new lease of life and now, effectively runs as a Smart TV. Even better, the remote can be synced with the old TV to control power, volume etc.

Now, instead of a TV remote, a Freeview remote, and a phone to control streaming, she does everything via the one Google Streamer remote (she ditched the Freeview box and watches local channels via TVNZ / ThreeNow apps).

Highly recommend to anyone who wants Smart TV functionality but doesn't want to fork out for a mid-to-high tier Smart TV. In my opinion, it's a better option to convert an older quality TV into a smart device with the Google TV Streamer 4K, than it is to buy a more expensive, but low-end Smart TV that will has poor picture, color range, sound etc.

Beware that this device unlike CCwGTV does not have audio passthrough. This means that even if you have a content source that uses Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, the Streamer will convert it to a PCM stream, which can limit the audio quality and capabilities of your home theater setup. My smart TV was getting slower and slower and bearly working. Plugged this into the back and its so fast. Everything works as expected, have installed my non play store apps and all works. Can't beleive I waited so long before getting this.
The google remote controls the TV. Powers on, volume etc. so you never need to go back to the orignal remote unless your chaning inputs. My smart TV was getting slower and slower and bearly working. Once you get over the annoying set up it's fabulous!

I previously had Chromecast; I upgraded to this last month. connected to my Samsung tv. first two weeks it was nice. something wrong after that I can't control my TV and Q990D soundbar with Anynet+ set up. I gone back to Chromecast. In my opinion. if your Chromecast working fine, then you don't need this upgrade.
