There was little to be gained buying new machines as the specs were not hugely different but new build qualities are rubbish by comparison. Investigation showed that they were spending a lot of time at 100% Drive access (swap drive) so figured that SSD drives might be a solution due to the much higher transfer rates.

The laptops are performing extremely well with the new drives .... from pushing the power button to using Windows 10 Pro in 11 seconds ...

Long story short, bought a new rig with 240 SSD and I managed to fill it in 2 days or so. Wasn't so bad this time round, took about 3 days but at least I have my entire Steam library installed. Install was relatively simple, though it would have been nice to have some instructions in the form of 'you need to initialize this drive before it shows up on your system.' Uncle Google came to the rescue for a noob like me. Also didn't have a data cable or a cable for a modular PSU. I paid the same amount for a 120gb SSD not so long ago, so I was quite surprised! So far, so good.

The drive is great for some fast storage at this price range and would also work well for a primary drive.
