Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 3.5" Internal HDD

Yes, I know it is an SMR drive, so the write performance isn't great, so I selected this for what is essentially a back up drive within my PC. With only 4 slots suitable for standard size drives, I've swapped out a 2TB drive for this one, resulting in a massive increase in space available (i.e. a net extra 6TB), plus I can use the now spare HDD for one of my Proxmox servers.

So whilst not perfect as a drive, with the SMR and the slower RPM (5400 vs 7200 for smaller drives), this works perfectly for what I want to use it for at a good price. It will definitely get the job done, however it's an extremely loud and slow drive when reading and writing. As it gets fuller it gets slower. There are definitely better drives out there, but this one gets the job done if you don't mind the speed and noise. Not impressed. Read errors and less than two years old.

This is a reliable storage product, not for gaming systems, there are faster drives for that, but for reliable storage with many read write operations this drive is ideal. Your motherboard has to be able to address 4TB if you want to use the entire drive as one but you can partition and run the partitions in RAID on older systems. This drive is quieter than previous models and lower profile. Performance is good. Price for capacity is excellent at the time of purchase. This will change of course and may not apply when you read this a year from now. Since backup is essential buy 2 and maintain a back up to safeguard your data. Currently while writing this review it is quarantine level 3 and PB tech had to make the best with what the government gave them. I feel like PB tech doesn't cease to amaze me, been purchasing items from them for multiple years now. As pointed out by another reviewer, these drives are SMR. I my experience the writing speed falls off as the disk becomes close to full. However for most of the drive the write speed is good, and as long as you do not wish to fill it up to the brim all that is missing is some dollars of the price tag.

If you want to fill it to the brim and/or put it in a NAS there are drives which are more suited for this purpose, albeit that they cost slightly more.

Speeds are alright, it has a large amount of space, and it's cheap.

Cons: Can be VERY loud and is sometimes rather slow compared to a more expensive drive.

These barracuda drives are SMR, but at this price you can’t really beat the noise, efficiency and overall quality. I have several of these and the sustained write can actually be really good on a clear drive.
