Seagate BarraCuda 8TB 3.5" Internal HDD

Brought this as storage of movies, works well have no problems with it. I decided to buy after the overwhelming good reviews. These have become my go-to hard drives. Reasonable performance, great value if you compare to the 4 Tb. I'm moving from a seperate NAS to adding these drives to a PC (and using the NAS for backup only). And I've not had any problems to date.

I'm sure in three years time, when you read this review, it will be terribly outdated, but right now, stop worrying about performance, reliability and space and just do it. I installed this in a file server to be used as backup storage - setting up was easy, Linux is able to start/stop the drive when access via NFS from other machines in the network is called for then power down after a period of inactivity, but I'm getting slow transfers across my gigabit home network, much less than what I expected, way less than the network can handle. I doubt my NFS setup is to blame as another smaller HDD that is my main active NFS share gets 100MB/s+ over gig ethernet - this Seagate is at barely 10% of that during a test copy of a pile of 80MB RAW files from a camera. I cant help but wonder if SMR is to blame, and I'll agree with others that more effort should be undertaken by Seagate and/or PBTech to differentiate this from CMR drives - had I known this was a SMR drive I would have ponied up more coin for a CMR drive to begin with. Never mind, its installed and its working, but backing up is going to take more of my time than hoped for - EDIT - I returned the drive to PBTech because the random write speeds were just far too slow due to SMR - to manually backup approx 3TB at 2 hours per night would have taken 3 months at the speeds I was seeing - PBTech deducted the usual 20% restocking fee and credited me with the remainder, so I ended up buying a 6TB CMR drive to replace this one.

Need cheap storage? This is a cromulent option.

The unit I bought has 48595 Hours and 74 spin-ups on the clock. It does still work, kind of, but it's having episodes of incredibly slow reads and writes while it clocks up thousands of ECC error corrections, so it's off to the farm. This is just a single data point, so take with a grain of salt.

S.M.A.R.T. still reports good, strangely enough.

For the record, I've got WD Black 2TB drives in the same box which have been running 15 years. Even the 'weaklings' lasted at least 10 years. Performance wise, perfectly adequate for a desktop HDD, but definitely slower than the Constellation ES or WD Black drives in the array.
