I purchased this cooler in April 2016 with a view to improving cooling performance for a rather old Core2 Duo PC I use.

The supplied mount points were not compatible with the threaded screws of the MB; Also, the fan has a three pin setup and is not variable speed. Lastly, the amount of grease supplied on the pad would be insufficient for wicking, so do as I did and buy some Deepcool Z5 paste to go with your purchase.

The stock fan that came with the PC is the same size as the one supplied, so I recycled that, and used the wire clips and rubber pads of the Deepcool fan, to get variable speed. I also removed with screwdriver, needle nosed pliers and much cursing, the stock screws for mounting the MB clip mount. Also, I removed the LGA775/1155 mount pegs, as they were not needed, and they easily came out using the needle-nosed pliers.

As the screws were longer than the mount clip's shaft holes, I used the 5mm shaft of the screwdriver to turn 8x springs out of chrome-steel paperclips - you can use chrome-steel wire of the same 0.1mm gauge if you prefer, to act as a spacer/washer (a very deep one!)

I cleaned the CPU with the Z-5 gel's spatula, and vacuumed away any residual dry grease.
I then attached the mount successfully, with the stock screws. Finally I plugged the stock fan into the CPU plug.

===============

The stock heatsink (which was clogged with dust) had a median temperature while running of 50 deg. C, and got to 70 deg. C for some games processes (IL-2 1946, Lock On, 3DS Max rendering of videos) that will cause a process halt.

With the Deepcool Ice Edge - EVERYTHING is WAY BETTER !

Overall running temp on CPU (checked with OpenHardware Monitor freeware), is down to 35 deg. C on idle, and about 45 deg. C on average operations.

Running the same intense applications that gave rise to the shut downs before, max temp is 55 deg. C, the same as median with the stock heatsink.

As the CPU is now being better cooled, performance jumps a notch to the maximum clock speed without a thermodynamic hit, allowing literally ALL applications to run better - the WinXP sessions are now drastically faster, and my Ubuntu Linux sessions are scintillating, with overall performance now off the chart.

Conclusions
=========

On an older or mid-level Core 2 Duo -> Core i5 system, this is a very worthy upgrade, reducing the thermal load on your CPU by over 20 deg C, or 40 , which is literally HUGE. It opens the door to sustained Game and CAD use on PC, as well as increased performance, and increased component life.

For machines being overclocked or used over-spec, then this is not a suitable solution, but then it was never meant to be.

Please do not buy this without also investing in a tube of Z5 thermal wicking grease to go with it.

Great cooler, I am running a AMD 8 Core and the OEM fan kept on going at full speed with medium load. This cooler cut my temps in half and its a lot more quiet. Awesome price!
