Historical Background
Both the Volontaire (SM767) and Marie Jeanne were traditional side trawlers constructed by the Anciens Chantiers Dubigeon (ACD) in Nantes. Launched in February 1950, the Volontaire was operated by the Association des Chalutiers Malouins, with Saint-Malo as its home port. Its sister ship, the Marie Jeanne, was based in Concarneau. These vessels were considered modern for their time, each equipped with a 1,100 horsepower Burmeister & Wain diesel engine. Originally designed to fish from both sides, they were later modified by removing the port-side trawl gallows. Both ships were decommissioned in the early 1970s and dismantled in Bilbao, Spain, in March 1973.
