META Quest 3s 256GB Mixed Reality Headset with 2x Quest Touch Plus controllers, 3 Year Warranty

I bought a 128GB version a couple of weeks ago, mainly for sim racing. Previously I had a PSVR2 which is a technically very good headset, so I can compare two of the best available. The difference is quite significant.

The PSVR2 has OLED screens, and the vibrancy and contrast compared to the Quest 3 is night and day - blacks are very grey in the Quest 3 even without having experienced the true black of OLED. Eye tracking in the PSVR2 is awesome, and of course the Quest 3 does not have that feature.

Other than that the Quest 3 beats the PSVR2 in every way; the pancake lenses mean there is no issue with finding the sweet spot - on the PSVR2 I felt like I was constantly adjusting the headset to try to get a crisp image, and setting the correct IPD was crucial. My wife and I have 2mm different IPD so I set the Quest 3 in between and it works perfectly for both of us. It's a lot easier to change on the Quest when you do need to adjust it, but it just isn't important to have it exact because of the lenses.

We both found the PSVR2 very hot to use, whereas the Quest 3 does not seem to have nearly so much of an issue with making us hot - just as well with the fabric facial interface I guess; that is not one of the best features and I will replace it with something more hygienic soon, because active games do still make us sweat so it will get gross. It feels a bit rough on the face as well.

The colour passthrough of the Quest 3 is infinitely better than the grainy black and white of the PSVR2, and of course allows AR as well as VR experiences which are not why I bought mine, but which I am finding I really enjoy. When I decided to buy it I was not too worried about the Quest 3 being standalone, but it is so much easier to use the headset when all I have to do is pick it up and power it on - I have been using it to watch Youtube rather than on my TV for example. It feels like I have used it more in two weeks than I used the PSVR in over a year because it can do so much more than just game and it is so much easier to use it.

What surprised me with the Quest most of all is motion sickness. I bought it thinking I would have to train myself gradually into using it for sim racing as playing Gran Turismo 7 in VR made me feel queasy very quickly, but the first session after I got Assetto Corsa Competizione properly configured for VR I started with a 10 minute race but ended up driving multiple races for nearly two hours, and I felt fine the whole time. I don't know why that difference but it is a huge bonus I really didn't expect.

In summary there isn't anything else on the market that beats the Quest 3 today. There is room for improvement, but a lot of that is coming with software updates. OLED isn't bright enough (yet) to be used with pancake lenses, and having tried OLED with fresnel and LCD with pancake I can tell you that I'd take a crisp display with less contrast and grey black over an out of focus one any day. I hope to try a Vision Pro later this week when I am in the US, but it doesn't have PCVR capability so even if I had the money to buy one I wouldn't.

I bought the Kiwi battery head strap with mine and it was definitely a good move - the battery drains fast and having something to keep it topped up for longer is well worthwhile. Also the Kiwi strap is comfy. I used the stock one for one evening before the Kiwi was delivered and I was glad to take it off.

This headset absolutely rocks, having it fully stand alone and being able to use anywhere is just a win win. I highly recommend this headset for anyone getting into vr or getting back in after a long time away. I got the meta carry case with it aswell and it fits in there perfectly. Having previously used a Rift S I was looking to upgrade for Sim Racing.
Quality and clarity is amazing! The ability to play Meta games unteathered is also a bonus with some good games try.
Love the pass through mode.
Only downside is can be tricky and fiddly to get it to run PCVR as opposed to stand alone.

Pretty much everything is amazing especially for someone that got one as their first headset like me. my only major issue with it is the battery life, when it's being used it generally doesn't charge due to the better specs, of course there are ways to improve the life like power saver mode, but investing in a good cable like a 2 in 1 will definitely help.

During initial setup it did take some time to update (that could just be my internet) connecting to wifi was straight forward, it's even easier with the companion app on your phone. There is plenty of stuff to do on the headset including lots of games such as beatsaber. It's also reasonably easy to connect to a PC for pcvr tittles. There are plenty of updates that include lots of quality of life features. For the gamers you can even get apps like discord working with a bit of effort

Overall you can't get better for the price point even if it does look a bit hefty, and with a headset like this it's even easier to get in to VR than ever before.

You can either buy a a second monitor or get started in vr..
you can extend the battery life by just plugging a power bank into it now it runs much longer then 2 hour sessions.. i have Xiaomi Mi 20000mAh 50W Fast Charging in my pocket i am running it in wireless mode though.. so it may not be ideal for some people

unless you have a workflow requirement you may need more then 128gb hd space.. otherwise.. it too me a while too stop using the thumbstick to look around and having 2 bathmats on top of each other for standing room reference really helped me to stop punching the desk. You can either buy a a second monitor or get started in vr..

It was a bit more expensive than ordering direct from Meta, but I could click and collect the same day and guarantee I had it in time for his birthday.
We were worried the lenses were not as good as the more expensive models but none of us have had any issues that we can tell.
Factory packaging was great and protective but it would be nice if they came with a carry case as standard. After shelling out hundreds of dollars already it is hard to then pay another $150 for a case. Great fun right out of the box.
