If your photos have any grain texture to them the light bounces on the feed thru and shows up on the digital copy. If your photos have a fair amount of black in them it does a poor quality job. Most likely due to it only scans in 24bit verses 48bit colour like the flatbed. If your photos are recent and have a flat surface it does a ok job subject to how much black is in the photo. I would not recommend as the quality output is a bit poor. Fast yes but was so hopeful it would be better quality. A bit unusable for what i need.

Really Impressed with scanner; the daunting task of scanning 1000s of old family photos suddenly became manageable. This scanner is as good as the online reviews say and is a breeze to get up and running. What was taking days to achieve with a flat bed scanner, suddenly was done in a few hours. Output quality is good and the auto improvement function which provides you with the original and enhanced version is really good. While the price high compared with a traditional flat bed scanner, in my case it paid for itself in the hours it saved. highly recommend the product.

Only con is that its stops of it detects residue or old paper on the back of the print, which then requires you to load the print inside the supplied protective sleeve so that it can be scanned. It would be better if they provided a 3-4 of these sheets as I suspect this will be the first item to wear out.

There is lots of noise in the blacks, the resolution isn't that great and it alters the colour significantly (even with the auto/enhancement settings). I had to bring the photos into editing software to correct them myself which is a big pain. I tried adjusting every setting to try and squeeze a better scan out but with no luck.

A little bit disappointing since this product had such glowing reviews. In summary, fantastic speed and organising software but not good enough scan quality to throw the originals away. After some research on available products for scanning a Lifetime of Photos, I settled on purchasing this scanner. Initially it appears quite expensive - but the pay-back is from the efficiency that it displays in getting on with the job of scanning individual photos.

By way of background after 45 years of happy marriage, children and grand-children there are a lot of albums / photos to work through. As I already had a HP ScanJet 5300C flatbed scanner, I initially tested that scanner’s capability. This scanner is now several years old, still works well, but is very slow. It took all of one afternoon to scan just 50 Wedding Photos, so I concluded that a newer machine was the way to go.

The new scanner was kept wrapped up to Christmas Day and with other family matters and holidays I have so far only been able to use the new machine for part of two days. However, in that time I have successfully scanned ~ 750 photos. It is really fast compared to my experience above. There is a good review / tutorial on the net to help you understand more fully what it can do and how to set it up. General advice is to just scan one packet of the traditional film- photos - that’s say 36 - 40 photos at a time, and to lightly open and clean the top of the scanner at least after ~ every 300 photos.

The quality of the scanned and enhanced photos is very good for home use / sharing with friends. So far, I have only had one roll of film / photo set where the scanned images have remained very orange (originals 40+ years old) - so there may be some additional software that can help me potentially re-do that small set.

At this stage I am saving all my images to Goggle Photos and hope to have this task completed by 01-Jun-2021 after which I understand charges will apply to newly scanned photos. Still, lots of albums to work through - but will be achievable.

The hardest part of the task is setting the time-lines for the dates or approximate dates of when each photo was taken. The date doesn't have to be 100% correct but history & value will be added the more accurately this can be done. It is a pity that chemists and others who used to process rolls of film didn't put the process date on the backs of photos to help this need now. There are code details on each - but meaningless as to actual dates.

In summary the easiest photos to scan through this machine are photos straight out of packets (from the original chemist processors).

Photos in albums take more time to remove carefully to avoid damage to each photo, than it takes to run them through the scanner.

For really valuable photos the machine comes with one protective clear sleeve into which these valuable photos can be placed and then feed through the scammer. It’s a pity that the machine comes with just one sleeve.

When all of this work is done - the scanner can be used to scan future documents - importance family bills or whatever and this lead closer to the ideal of a paperless office etc.

Overall, this machine appears good value for money - given all that it can efficiently do.

I wanted to scan a huge pile of photos and be able to do documents, and this does it all. Yes, I have had to tweak some settings, but I can save profiles, and it's spot on every time. I do wonder if some reviews have bothered doing this. Photos are amazing, fast, and of good quality, with auto or manual corrections. It was the documents I also wanted, and OMG, is it so good. Add in the auto OCR/save to Word, and it's perfect. I'm super happy with it. Not cheap, but for me, it's been worth every cent. Update Nov 24 - Be wary as a current Windows Update can break Smartscan, so it won't launch and will crash, and no fix has been issued yet by Epson or MS (known issue). This is the 3rd scanner I've purchased to help me through shoeboxes full of photos I want to digitize for my children's albums. Of all my scanners this is the one that has powered through handfuls of photos in minutes. Although other scanners help with negatives and slides, this one is perfect for photos. Easy to keep clean which is important when doing bulk photos. As someone who has been around a while now (he said understatingly) I've taken and collected a very large number of 5x3.5 and 6x4 printed photos - I've wanted to scan many of these to digital for a very long time now, but the sheer number of them (12,000+) means it would be crazy expensive getting it done by a local scanning service, and crazy time consuming to do it on a more commonly available flatbed scanner. The FF-680W fills the need for speed without sacrificing too much quality, quite admirably, with 600 dpi scans taking no more than 3 seconds per, and the ability to load 30 in the feeder - it really is a no brainer. For a box full of ordinary old snaps, the FF-680W will do a fine job - for the few I'd like to get restorations or enlargements done on, I'll get the Epson V39 flatbed too, so I've got both fast scanning (FF-680W) and high quality scanning (V39).
