More power in the Pi is just what was needed. Put one to work as a security camera monitor, the extra CPU can handle more cameras. Having used the previous 3b+ model as a cheap and cheerful Raspbian desktop, the 4 makes a great leap forward into usability. Of course the biggest change is in the memory. With this 4Gb model, I've noticed a much better experience. Granted I'm not stressing it with a huge amount of local apps. But now you can have many more tabs open. Switching tabs and apps is "way" better. (Yes, that's a totally acceptable objective measure.) System paging is obviously much lower, and there's no sign of thrashing that used to occur from time to time with the 3b in use. BTW you'll still going to be happy running Libreoffice, VLC, ...

I've not done an exhaustive test or anything like that. this is just subjective feeling after switching boards. You do need to upgrade Raspbian to Buster for the 4. I find the Google apps I use daily work fine. Even the browser based Sketchup tool seems to be usable. In this later case i suspect the better processor and GPU help.
I'm only on a single head, HD tv through a standard HDMI cable. And using a 2.5A (13W) DC adaptor. The later is crucial to success. Don't try using these late model Pi's with any old micro USB lying around. It just won't work. I have just used my old micro to C adaptor (from my old Nexus) and have had no problem so far with the power. Similarly you'll need a standard to micro HDMI adaptor to use one of your HDMI cables lying around. Note if you're planning on going two head or 4k, then you'll need a new cable with the slimline plug. You won't get two HDMI adaptors side by side.
Can't talk to the heat problem you'll read about on the 'Net. It's bound to be hotter. Mine just sits out in the open collecting dust so plenty of natural airflow. No thoughts on increase in performance with the separate USB 2/3 buses now. Or the Ethernet moving from the USB bus. It has to be better though.
If you're looking for a simple, small, low power draw, quiet computing device with responsive desktop performance, IMHO you can't beat this for the price. The Raspberry Pi4 with 4GB does as advertised on the box
