Very easy to set up the app and use continuous monitoring - you can enter in a $/KwH cost and it will estimate your monthly expenses for the device/powerpoint. Also great ability to remotely toggle power on and off.

Once they upgrade to the 1.4.1 firmware, then you need to use the App to enable 3rd party integrations again if you are using Home Assistant. But once that happens, they are spot on and work really well for integrations. Their energy tracking isn't perfect but its good enough to create automations around.

I tried setting them up as Matter devices initially but because of the old firmware they ship with, it doesn't support the energy readings from them. Despite using it only with a low-power LED light, the device gets warmer than I would expect.

As well as being able to power devices on and off by wifi you can do it on schedule and remotely. Interfaces with Home Assistant easily. With the Tapo app you can input your power rates, peak and off peak, it will tell you how much your device is costing. A breeze to add to both the TP-Link app, as well as directly to Apple HomeKit using the Matter protocol. The only downside is that the energy monitoring is not available through Apple Home, although that may be a limitation of Matter. Bought two, is currently my goto smart plug. Unlike others, it doesn't block the adjacent plugs on a double-outlet (looking at you WeMo, EVE, Hue)! Physically, it’s compact enough that it doesn’t block adjacent outlets, which is a small detail but matters in practice. Build quality feels decent, not premium, but certainly not flimsy. For something you’re leaving plugged in long-term, that’s reassuring.

If there’s a downside, it’s that you don’t get much beyond the core features. There’s no advanced automation within the plug itself, so you’re relying on Apple Home or another ecosystem to handle that. But realistically, that’s how most people will use it anyway.

Overall, this is a straightforward, reliable smart plug that does exactly what it promises. If you’re invested in Apple Home and want something that works without friction, this is a smart buy, especially considering the price.
