Lenovo ThinkCenter M920Q Intel Core i5-9500T Tiny PC (A Grade Refurbished)

The hardware was in excellent condition, it even still had the peel-off clear plastic over some parts. Packaging was good and provided lots of protection.

First boot the OS install went well, with the usual out-of-the-box Win 11 install experience.

Once into Win 11 I performed a Windows Update, this is where things started to go wrong. It turns out the Win 11 build on these is not very clean.

1) These are supplied with Win 11 22H2 which is out-of-support, so be prepared for a bunch of Windows Update's to get it up to support.

1) These are supplied with Win 11 22H2 which is out-of-support, so be prepared for a bunch of Windows Update's to get it up to support.

2) After installing the first volley of Windows Updates and rebooting I noticed my Wireless and Ethernet adapters were called "Wifi 2" and "Ethernet 2". They couldn't be renamed as a device with the name "Wifi" and "Ethernet" already existed. Going into the Device Manager and turning on hidden devices showed a massive list of previous hardware, different processors, different hard drives, batteries, and of course, different Wifi and Ethernet adapters. I suspect this OS image has been built and rebuilt a number of times on different hardware. I had to Uninstall all the "offline" devices manually. This allowed me to rename the adapters.

3) Next Windows Updates stopped working, a particular update just failed over-and-over. Checking the Event Log I could see it was failing to create a System Restore point. A trip into System Restore settings revealed an old C: drive which was no longer available, but had been set as the System Restore drive. I had to set the current C: drive as the Restore Drive which cleared the old one out, but Win Update still failed. I then used the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter, which allowed Win Update to proceed.

4) After repeat checks & installs for Windows Update I wasn't offered any more updates, but I kept getting a warning about being on 22H2 and unsupported. A check of the Security panel showed no TPM chip. A trip into the BIOS was required to enable the TPM (and several other security best-practice options). After that, I had to find a Microsoft Feature Enablement pack (windows11.0-kb5027397-x64_3a9c368e239bb928c32a790cf1663338d2cad472.msu) to get Windows Update to offer the 23H2 upgrade and additional packages.

These aren't bad little boxes, but the OS and BIOS were a mess.

If I bought one of these again, I'd check the BIOS settings first, and then I'd use a fresh (current) Windows 11 install and overwrite the HDD.
