The Grumman TBF-1 Avenger is an American, single-engine, metal-structure, medium-wing bomber-torpedo plane from the Second World War. The Avenger was designed as a rugged, carrier-based aircraft capable of delivering torpedoes and bombs, and was one of the most significant naval aircraft of its era.
The TBF Avenger was first used during the pivotal Battle of Midway in 1942. Its baptism of fire can be considered successful due to the numerous hits on Japanese aircraft carriers scored by these planes, although its reputation was slightly tarnished by the heavy losses suffered by the Avenger squadrons during this battle.
Nevertheless, after Midway, the TBF-1 earned the name "Avenger" - symbolizing its role as a tool of revenge against Japanese naval forces. From that point on, the Avenger was widely deployed throughout the Pacific theater and became one of the most important weapons in helping the United States secure victory in the conflict.
After World War II, the once-crucial Avenger was quickly phased out from frontline service. A small number of them took part in the early stages of the Korean War, but by the mid-1950s, only a few remained in active U.S. service.
However, Avengers enjoyed a longer life in the service of other air forces, including those of Great Britain, New Zealand, Canada, and Japan - the very nation it had once fought against. These aircraft remained operational until as late as 1962. After being retired from military service, many surviving Avengers were acquired by aviation museums or private collectors, becoming prized examples of one of World War II's most iconic bombers.
