The CH-47 Chinook is a heavy transport helicopter developed in the United States during the Cold War and still in service today, with production as of 2019 handled by Boeing Helicopters. The prototype made its first flight in 1961, and the helicopter officially entered service with the U.S. Army in 1962. In its modern CH-47F version, the Chinook has a total length of 30.1 meters and features rotors with an 18.3-meter diameter. The helicopter is powered by two Lycoming T55-GA-714A engines, each producing 4,733 horsepower, allowing it to reach a maximum horizontal flight speed of around 315 km/h. One of the Chinook's most distinctive features is its tandem rotor system and the absence of a traditional tail boom.
Development of the CH-47 Chinook began in the late 1950s, when the U.S. Army was seeking a replacement for the aging CH-37 Mojave. The Army wanted a machine with a modern power unit and improved performance characteristics. The result was a helicopter with a unique tandem rotor configuration, which not only met the Army's requirements but also offered surprising modification potential that would allow it to evolve and remain in service for decades.
Throughout its production life, the Chinook has been developed into numerous improved versions. The first mass-produced variant was the CH-47A, followed by the CH-47B, which featured more powerful engines and a redesigned hull for improved performance. The CH-47F version, tested starting in 2001, introduced major upgrades including modernized avionics, a new engine, and a revised chassis, keeping the helicopter relevant in modern military operations.
Thanks to its versatility and performance, the CH-47 Chinook became a popular choice for militaries around the world. Various versions of the Chinook have been adopted and operated by a wide range of countries including the United States, Egypt, Greece, and Canada. Its long service life and adaptability have cemented its reputation as one of the most successful transport helicopters in aviation history.
