Features
Introducing the Heller 1:16 Citroen DS 19, a meticulously crafted scale model that showcases the timeless elegance of one of France's most beloved vehicles. This exquisite replica captures the mesmerizing curves and unique design elements that made the Citroen DS 19 an automotive icon. Perfect for collectors and automotive enthusiasts, the model reflects exceptional craftsmanship, offering an authentic and highly detailed representation.
Debuting at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, the Citroen DS 19 revolutionized the auto industry with its innovative hydropneumatic suspension and avant-garde styling. The model replicates these pioneering features, including independent four-wheel suspension, which provides a realistic feel. It also highlights iconic elements like the single-spoke steering wheel and sleek, futuristic body lines that set the DS 19 apart from any car of its time.
Background
CITROEN's vision for the future began shortly after World War II, anticipating a rise in living standards across France and Europe. Following the success of the 2 CV, the company aimed to replace the aging 15 and 11 CV models with something bold and forward-looking. Thus, the VGD project (short for "Voiture à Grande Diffusion" or "mass-produced car") was launched, with its first sketches dating back to 1945.
Under the leadership of Andre Lefebvre, the DS project embraced innovation in every aspect. Italian sculptor and designer Flaminio Bertoni shaped the car's aerodynamic body, while Paul Mages engineered the groundbreaking hydropneumatic suspension system. Pierre Bercot oversaw the reworking of the existing 1911 cc D engine. By the end of 1954, the design was finalized, ready for its bold public debut.
The car's unconventional appearance initially divided public opinion in France. But beneath its striking looks lay numerous engineering breakthroughs. The hydropneumatic suspension system offered an unparalleled level of comfort, while new materials such as plastic for the roof and rear window, and light alloy for the hood, showcased cutting-edge automotive design. Innovative touches like the single-spoke steering wheel, sleek turn signals, and frameless doors made the DS 19 a true masterpiece of form and function.
