This kit recreates the Red Army horsemen from World War II, a time when mounted soldiers were nearing the end of their combat role. Despite the mechanization of most modern militaries, the Soviet Union maintained 13 cavalry divisions at the start of the war. These units played a key role during critical battles, especially when mobility and flexibility were urgently needed.
In the chaos of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion in 1941, the Soviet army suffered significant losses. As a response, it called up additional mounted troops. These cavalry units were instrumental during the Battle of Moscow, acting as mobile reserves that could be quickly repositioned in difficult terrain where vehicles struggled.
The Red Army began integrating cavalry with armor to form Cavalry Mechanized Groups from late 1942. These hybrid units were designed to combine the mobility of horsemen with the firepower and durability of armored vehicles. Cavalry retained the unique advantage of moving across terrain inaccessible to trucks or tanks.
The set includes two mounted Soviet soldiers, both unpainted, suitable for display or wargaming. Also included is a unit base with a flag and a game card to integrate these troops into Zvezda's "Art of Tactic" strategy game system.
