Alogic DX2 USB-C Dual 4K Docking Station with 65W Power Delivery

This is a solid and sturdy unit with a sleek design that works perfectly to extend my surface pro and macbook pro to two displays. Even though I only need the USB-C connection, I like that it has the USB-A connection to deploy if required. It has all the connections I need for my set up and I like that it charges while connected. You just need to disconnect when not in use to avoid ruining the battery. I can leave the charger in my carry bag.

Note that it is not an easy connect and go. You do need to download the drivers for your intended device or laptop in order to extend to the displays. Otherwise, I love it and highly recommend. This dock is used to connect a MacBook Pro M1 2020 and a Windows laptop to two displays as well as to a router.

In my roughly two weeks of testing, the dock has so far proven to be reliable. With only a single cable to my MacBook, the dock charges the laptop, connects it to my router for Internet, and allows the machine to extend to two displays. I have NOT found the need to unplug and plug the cable from and to the laptop so far due to connection issues. I have set my two external monitors (2560x1080 and 1920x1080) to 60Hz—I can play 60fps videos on the two external monitors and the MacBook's built-in display without frame drops. External drives connected to the three USB-A ports are detected by the operating system. Likewise, connecting my iPhone and iPad to the USB-C port makes it readable to the MacBook with no issues. The same can be said for the Windows machine.

On Linux, everything except for outputting to the external monitors work. I run Fedora 38, and DisplayLink only officially makes their drivers available to Ubuntu as of the time of writing. Hence, I still need to connect my Linux machine directly to my two external monitors using HDMI/USB-C. However, let me reiterate that everything else works—the dock charges my Linux laptop, supplies wired Internet to it, allows the laptop to detect USB-A and USB-C peripherals connected to the dock, etc. And this Linux laptop does not even have Thunderbolt—a USB-C 3.2 port is used to connect to the dock.

macOS and Ubuntu require the step of installing DisplayLink drivers to take full advantage of the dock. I bought the dock knowing well that I need DisplayLink drivers for my MacBook. In Windows, the special step to install the drivers is not required, likely because Windows Update seamlessly installs the drivers when it detects the dock being plugged into the laptop. This is true even for a fresh install of Windows.

I only have two very minor gripes. First, the dock does not support Night Shift on macOS and the "Night light" feature on Windows. Only the laptops' built-in display turns amber, while the monitors retain their colours. Second, I cannot use MonitorControl on macOS to natively set the external displays' hardware brightness and contrast settings. Instead, MonitorControl will adjust brightness by "software" instead, so that screenshots taken on the external monitors can appear darker than if they were taken from the built-in display instead. Perhaps, this is a limitation of the DisplayLink chip inside the dock, considering that other docks can allow adjusting the hardware brightness, contrast, colour and gamma controls by hardware directly from the computer.

Nonetheless, I am still giving five stars because of the dock's reliability so far.
