Ubiquiti EdgeMAX (ER-X-SFP) EdgeRouter X SFP

Great little box. I've replaced my Vodafone FibreX router with this – remember to set up Vlan with ID 10 heh – and it works perfectly. A much more professional option. Ideal if you're already using some Ubiquiti products with PoE, like the UAP AC.

Do note: upgrade the firmware to the latest version before setting up, always a good idea with any device. Great little box. Great little unit, very powerful. Configuration is not for the beginner and the basic 'autofirewall' rules are limited but not too hard to setup more securely (like allowing only listed IP's to SSH etc) Needed this unit for home where I run Fibre between my house and outbuilding (Garage / Sleepout) due to sharing the same underground service with the power and it just works with the Mikrotik at the other end of the Fibre, no more crashing of the ISP supplied router and the PoE is a bonus running my Ubiquiti AP without needing the POE Injector freeing up plugs. Vodafone is annoying to deal with (if you have a broadband with a landline), but this router isn't. Replaced Spark Huawei router needing daily reboots. ER-X is an excellent performer, very secure firewall and UBT have started supplying FW updates again. Heaps of online setup info, but gee you will need it, NOT A PLUG N PLAY solution at all. There are "wizards" within the UI to assist but for comfort that the setup is correct, you really need to research your ISP requirements fully (MTU size supported, vlan used, if mss clamping required etc), learn how to configure the firewall rules, port forwarding (pretty slick), DDNS (pretty slick). I purchased this unit to replace the Huawei router supplied by my ISP which is ageing and giving signs of being tired of life. I have some other Ubiquiti gear and I like the pro configurability. It does everything I need it to, handles routing from the NBN NTD (I'm in Australia,) provides POE for a WAP, and the network management is a bonus extra. I might add a fibre connector to the SFP port but it's not currently used. Device wasn't plug-n-play in terms of pulling config info from my ISP, but after configuring the VLAN and adding user & password pppoe settings it connected fine. If you're considering this you are likely at least as tech literate as me :) so you know an EdgeRouter isn't a basic unmanaged switch.
TL;DR High quality product at a great price, with lots of options. Very flexible, albeit slightly complex in terms of configuration.

I've just installed this router on my home network to replace the horrible old one, and it's brilliant. For anyone who actually understands networking, you can do so much more with it than the more common brands. And for everyone else, the setup wizard just works beautifully. I bought the Ubiquiti EdgerRouter X SFP for my home network and just use it as a switch with one gateway to the internet. I plan on having two Ubiquiti Unifi access points in the future and the 24v passive POE built in to the Ubiquiti EdgerRouter X SFP is perfect for my needs.
